Floating Above the Waves: Electric Foiling Ferries Aim to Solve Tahoe Traffic

2 min read

Commuters and vacationers at Lake Tahoe may soon have a futuristic way to bypass road congestion by gliding literally above the water. FlyTahoe recently showcased the Vessev VS-9, a sleek twenty nine foot electric vessel that utilizes hydrofoil technology to lift its hull out of the lake once it hits about twenty miles per hour. By riding on underwater wings rather than pushing through the surf, the boat reduces drag and provides a smooth, silent journey that remains unaffected by choppy waves.

Founder Ryan Meinzer envisions a transit network that connects Tahoe City on the North Shore with the Heavenly area on the South Shore. The plan begins with one or two of these ten passenger vessels before expanding to larger ships capable of carrying thirty people along with their skis and bicycles. This strategic shift toward waterborne transport aims to alleviate the notorious traffic jams that plague the roads surrounding the lake during peak tourist seasons and winter ski rushes.

Bringing this vision to life requires more than just high tech boats; it demands a complete overhaul of local logistics. Over the last two years, FlyTahoe has been coordinating charging infrastructure, docking agreements with waterfront landowners, and microtransit links to ensure passengers can easily get from the pier to their final destination. These partnerships are essential for transforming a novelty ride into a practical daily commute for locals and visitors alike.

While enthusiasts are eager to see these silent gliders in action, there are still several hurdles remaining including official certifications and infrastructure builds. If everything stays on track, FlyTahoe expects US built versions of these vessels to hit the water soon, with full commercial passenger operations potentially launching by early 2028. For now, the VS-9 serves as a promising glimpse into a quieter, greener future for transportation in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
