The High Stakes Gamble Behind Oracle’s AI Expansion

October 19, 2026 • 2 min read

The euphoria surrounding artificial intelligence is facing a cold reality check as credit stress begins to ripple through the sector. While the initial AI boom drove valuations skyward, recent volatility suggests a shift in investor mood, moving from blind optimism toward a cautious scrutiny of balance sheets. This tension has placed Oracle squarely in the spotlight, as the tech giant balances an aggressive expansion into cloud infrastructure against a mounting pile of debt that is flirting with junk status.

Oracle has transformed itself from a traditional enterprise software firm into an AI powerhouse, committing billions to data centers and forging massive partnerships with players like OpenAI. However, this ambition comes with a steep price tag. With over 118 billion dollars in long term debt and projected negative free cash flows stretching into 2027, the company is essentially betting its financial health on a future wave of AI revenue that hasn’t fully arrived yet. For many, Oracle has become the bellwether for the entire movement; if it falters, it could trigger a domino effect among institutional investors who are legally barred from holding non investment grade bonds.

Market indicators show that some traders are already nervous. Credit default swaps for Oracle have spiked significantly over the past year, suggesting that the perceived risk of default is rising. S&P Global has already nudged Oracle down to its lowest possible investment grade rating, warning that further downgrades could happen if leverage remains too high or if the broader AI strategy fails to deliver tangible profits soon. Such a drop into junk territory would force expensive refinancing and potentially spark forced sell offs by major funds.

Despite these red flags, there is still plenty of confidence left in the room. Many analysts argue that comparing Oracle to struggling smaller firms in the space is unfair because of its diversified revenue streams and historical stability. Supporters suggest that Oracle simply needs more time for its massive infrastructure projects to come online and begin generating cash. For its part, Oracle has remained adamant that protecting its investment grade status is its top priority, insisting that the economic returns on AI infrastructure will eventually justify today’s heavy spending.
