A Familiar Face Returns to the Golden City

October 28, 2026 • 2 min read

DeForest Buckner is heading back to where it all began. In a move that brings a former cornerstone of their defense home, the San Francisco 49ers have reached an agreement with the Indianapolis Colts to reacquire the veteran defensive tackle. To finalize the reunion, San Francisco will send a fourth round pick in 2027 to Indianapolis, marking a full circle moment for a player who helped define the team’s identity years ago.

Buckner remains a formidable presence on the interior line even as he navigates his eleventh professional season. His production hasn’t dipped significantly during his time away from the Bay Area; through 2026, he has already racked up four sacks and eight quarterback hits while forcing turnovers and disrupting passing lanes. These numbers reflect the same dominance that made him a star during his initial stint with the 49ers, particularly during the run toward Super Bowl LIV at the end of the last decade.

The departure comes at a turbulent time for Indianapolis, which seems to be entering a phase of aggressive restructuring. Reports suggest Buckner had grown visibly frustrated with the Colts’ recent losing streak, and with his contract nearing its expiration, both sides saw value in parting ways now. This trade follows closely on the heels of another major shakeup for Indy, who sent standout guard Quenton Nelson to Seattle earlier today.

For San Francisco, adding Buckner provides an immediate boost to their front seven with a player who requires zero adjustment period regarding culture or expectations. Since being drafted seventh overall out of Oregon in 2016, Buckner has built a resume featuring over seventy five career sacks and nearly two hundred quarterback hits. As he returns to Northern California, he brings seasoned leadership and elite playmaking ability back to a roster chasing another championship trophy.
